What Is a Microinverter?

Module-level power electronics explained — how a microinverter works and why it matters.

The basics

A microinverter is a small inverter mounted at each solar module that converts that panel’s DC output to grid-ready AC right on the roof. Instead of wiring panels in a long series string to one central inverter, every module gets its own conversion and its own maximum power point tracking (MPPT).

Why module-level matters

  • Shade tolerance: one shaded or underperforming panel does not drag down the rest of the array.
  • Per-panel monitoring: with a DTU gateway you see each module in S-Miles Cloud.
  • Safety: module-level conversion enables native NEC 690.12 rapid shutdown.
