Microinverters vs String Inverters

Why module-level conversion wins on complex roofs — and the trade-offs to know.

The core difference

A string inverter converts the combined DC of a whole string at once, so the weakest panel limits the rest. A microinverter converts each module independently, with its own MPPT — so shade or mismatch on one panel doesn’t drag down the array.

Microinverter String inverter
MPPT Per module Per string
Shading Isolated to the shaded panel Affects the whole string
Monitoring Module-level String/array-level
Rapid shutdown Built in at the module Needs added RSD devices

Where Hoymiles fits

Hoymiles HMS and HM-NT microinverters bring module-level MPPT, native NEC 690.12 rapid shutdown, and free module-level monitoring — ideal for shaded or multi-orientation roofs. To add storage, Hoymiles also offers HYS/HAS hybrid inverters.

Trade-offs

Microinverters add distributed electronics on the roof; in return you get granular monitoring and module-level safety. For simple, unshaded arrays a string inverter can be cost-effective — we’ll help you weigh it.
